Beyerdynamic DT770 pro vs Custom Studio headphones

I had a chance to compare these headphones recently and here are my conclusions after around thirty minutes of listening to them plus an AKG 240 and an Audio Technica ATH-M70x.

Comfort: both are equally comfortable, but have slightly different feels. Fully circumaural, equal amount of noise isolation and very similar weight.

Sound field: again very similar, but the DT770 had a very slight advantage.

Fidelity: the DT770 has the classic consumer boosts in the low and high frequencies, which usually makes things more enjoyable to listen. But the Custom Studio easily wins in this category with a much more accurate and studio targeted sound. Plus the four different bass curves are a nice option for a working engineer/musician. Speaking of that, the setting that adds the most bass is the one that brings the Custom Studio closest to the DT770 pro.

Just for the sake of completeness, the M70x was terrible in comparison. Too much highs and very reduced sound field. The AKG 240 could be described as a DT770 built at a third of the price, similar characteristics but really not at the same level as the Beyer's.

Conclusions: if you're looking to just enjoy music and not worry about fidelity, the DT770 are a good fit. If you want something to use while mixing or tracking, the Custom Studio is a no-brainer at this price range.

Update (Jan 6th, 2015): I didn't pay attention to this detail on the DT770, but the Custom Studio cable doesn't lock into the headphones. Which means it can somewhat easily get disconnected if the cable gets stuck.

  2. Also keep in mind that PS3 has support for Bluetooth version 2.0, which should be backwards-compatible. Last of all, you can only use one Bluetooth accessory with the PS3 at a time. wireless headset
