These tips are applicable to the iPhone 5 (and probably for newer models). These will essentially strip out all of the eye candy and what I think are non-essential features on the iPhone. Your mileage will vary, of course, but I've found these actually helpful.
- Disable bluetooth
- Settings > Bluetooth
- leave it on if you're using a bluetooth headset or ear piece
- Disable personal hotspot
- Settings > Personal Hotspot
- only turn it on if you need to share internet access to your laptop or someone else's
- Disable LTE
- Settings > Cellular > Enable LTE
- this will slow your data transfers (anything involving internet)
- Disable unnecessary notifications
- Settings > Notification Center
- I have all of these disabled, don't really need any. Disable at your liking.
- Disable Siri
- Settings > General > Siri
- Reduce text size
- Settings > General > Text Size
- Smaller text means more content per "page", means less scrolling. Scrolling requires re-drawing everything, which takes power.
- Disable window animations
- Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion
- Reduce transparency and white point
- Settings > General > Accessibility > Increase Contrast
- Disable phone noise cancellation
- Settings > General > Accessibility > Phone Noise Cancellation
- I find that doing calls with the headphones makes this feature unnecessary
- Disable switch control auto scanning
- Settings > General > Accessibility > Switch Control > Auto Scanning
- Disable background app refresh
- Settings > General > Background App Refresh
- This feature allows apps to continue to run even if they are in the background. Disable them on a per app basis. Note that things like GPS navigation will not work correctly when the app is in the background.
- Disable auto-brightness
- Settings > Wallpapers & Brightness
- You can change brightness manually, no need to have the iPhone checking luminosity levels for you.
- Disable location services
- Settings > Privacy > Location Services
- Location services allow apps to use your GPS location. You'll want to leave this on for maps, navigation and things like car services. You can also disable all and only enable specific apps when you open them (they'll ask you to enable location services).
